Gordie is a High School Science Teacher in a small town about 30 miles from me. He's given me permission to post these pictures. If you have any questions, feel free to PM them to me. If I cannot answer them, I'll get the answers for you.

Painted with a white "water shield" type paint. It's a pretty thick consistency, and quite waterproof. This is actually the second one to be built in the area in the past year.
Oh...yeah..."Cool Coat". |

It looks like the shutter lifts off and is stored on the ground when the dome is in use. So it doesn't slide back or anything.
I'm guessing that's weatherstripping we see there at the edge of the slit. Know how much it cost? Rich -------------------- President, Charlottesville Astronomical Society

I'm guessing that's weatherstripping we see there at the edge of the slit. Know how much it cost? Rich Hi, this is Gordie. Steve told me about this site and that he posted some photos here so I decided to join and help answer questions. The top part of the shutter slides back on wheels attached to the back of the dome. The bottom piece is removable. I have to get some silicone spray to put on the weatherstripping. When I slide it back it sticks a little until it gets on the wheels. The entire project was under $800 including running power from my house and the pier which was hand made from an old metal light pole. A friend of mine came up with the idea and did the welding for me. |

Rich Thanks, but I cannot take credit for that. My friend Marc built his dome first for about the same amount. Some of the materials were donated as well so that helped keep the cost down so you still have a chance! Gordie |

Gordy did one thing on his dome different than mine. He added a small cubby that I should have done. Nice feature to include when you are building an observatory in the 8' size.

What material is the outer shell of the dome made of? It seems to take the curved shape quite well.
