We'll see if the 1/4 inch phono plug idea works. As noted above, some designs of those are really batttle-ship ready, meant for lab patch panels or real, old-fashioned switchboards. Others are wimpier.
Well, in my scheme, the slip rings are "down the road". Regarding the above thoughts about the Nova III on ebay, perhaps it is worth it, and it's parts could help me out. But I'm ending up spending a few $100 per month just "futsing around" with various hardware parts (you know, brass tubing, bushings, and stuff that ends up not working -- uh R&D expenses). I recently talked my wife into me buying a nice Nikon camera - easily over $1k. I'm on spending probabtion for awhile.
IF I can find an interested party (in having my efforts become part of a community center), then I have a higher level of motivation to spend money. I'm sure that those of us in this conversation all share the somewhat obsessive nature of this hobby: trying for better solutions, more realism, flexibility, etc. If I got involved in a science-center development, I'd be really happy and highly motivated. Right now, I'm stealing time from my paid work.
A long time ago, my brother made a programmable version of my control panel. It was pretty primative, but this was pre-PC days. It involved a step-through memory approach, with Nixie tubes indicating the programming step. The state-of-the-art memory DIPs were 1k BIT chips. Just a bit of memory lane.
...but I can't quite get that NovaIII on ebay out of my mind.
